Layering: Not Just for Separates
Posted on 26 April 2018
When you read about layering in fashion magazines or on blogs, usually they’re talking about ways to mix and match separates of various weights and shapes. But dresses are one of the most versatile layering pieces out there, especially when the weather is changeable. Spring and Fall in Canada are especially good times to up your dress layering game. You can be prepared for whatever mix of cold, warm, sun, snow, rain, or wind we get, and look cute in your favourite dress at the same time!
Grab a Top Layer to Cover UpNo sleeves? No problem! Lots of dresses are sleeveless, or only have little cap sleeves, but that doesn’t mean you need to save them for the warm weather. Get yourself a collection of cardigans and boleros to keep your arms toasty. We offer a rainbow of these cover ups year-round at our Toronto boutiques.
Before cardigan and after. Cute both ways!
The best part? If the heat in your office gets to be too much, or it warms up in the afternoon, it’s easy to ditch the top layer and cool off again. Great for anyone who overheats easily! You can also layer a cute silk scarf or infinity scarf over top for extra style points.
Have Options for What Goes Underneath
There are a million ways to layer with your favourite dresses, for added warmth, or just to change up the look. Try pairing a dress you wear all the time with a top in a matching or contrasting colour. You can’t go wrong with a black turtleneck for staying warm and cozy (psst... we might still have a few of these bamboo fibre turtlenecks in store!). A cute blouse with a peter pan collar or tie neck is another good choice for changing up the look of a dress.

Tights and leggings are probably the best investment if you want to make the most of your dresses during all four seasons! In the dead of winter we live in fleece or faux fur-lined tights and leggings, but for spring or fall you can switch to lighter legwear. Opaque tights are always a nice choice because of their polished look that goes great with professional dresses. They’re also warmer than a typical pair of nylons because they’re thicker. You can stick to plain black or add a pop of colour!
Leggings are one of our most popular layering pieces here at Doll Factory by Damzels, and for good reason. We stock a selection of gorgeous, breathable bamboo fibre/cotton leggings (including plus sizes!) in multiple colours that are super stretchy and comfy. Of course, they also look fabulous under our dresses, with boots or knee-high socks!
